WordPress Sidebar
The WordPress sidebar is a dynamic area. It is worth your time to take a look at it and provide design and advance layout details. There is a lot in this area that can separate your theme from all the others on the internet. This is where a lot of imagination and creation can pay off.
The basic WordPress sidebar will only include the widget title and some content about the widget. This is all WordPress provides when it’s first installed. Yet the designer can get very creative with their own sidebars. Graphics, Flash, video and more can be used to sharpen up the sidbar area. Also consider adding widgets to the header area and footer.
The basic sidebar should be no less than 160 pixels wide. Anything smaller can break the layout. Some sidebars can be as large as 300 pixels or more to accommodate advertising. Yet keep in mind the larger the sidebar, the less space there is for the content area.
The sidebar will hold as many widgets as needed. Yet there is a find line between widgets, performance and presentation. Too many widgets can slow down a site and make it look cluttered. Some themes will limit how many widgets a sidebar will hold. This keeps the integrity of the theme and site performance at a presentable level. A limitation might be something that you may want to use to help beginners use your theme. For those that are more advanced you may want to allow these individuals to unlock the widget limitation.
