Add as many keywords in the title as possible, yet ensure it is still legible for visitors. The title of this post has a few keywords in it. Here are the list of keywords I used for this post. SEO, WordPress, WordPress SEO Tips, WordPress SEO, SEO Right are all keywords that fit perfectly in the title.
The opening bold sentence is part of the H1 tag. It also has my keywords in it. Again the sentence has to be legible. Following, is the opening paragraph. Although it is ideal to start off your first paragraph with the keyword, as long as it shows up somewhere in the first paragraph, you are good.
Although keywords are ignored by Google, Bing and others still use keywords. Add your keyword into the keyword meta tag. That is really all you need for basic SEO, now lets jump into something a little more advanced
Do you need advanced SEO tatics? There are many that do not believe in them. I use them when the need arises, yet I do not use advanced tactics all the time.

If your keyword is very competitive, no matter how much SEO work you do, it will not rank well right away. It could take months to a year for you to see the benefits of your work. Choose a nice mix of high competitive keywords and low competitive keywords to get some traffic while you wait for the other keywords to rank well.
