Microsoft Social Network Opens Introducing So.cl

It was no surprise to hear Microsoft coming out with its own social network. But what kind of response they will get from their users is something to be seen. There was no fanfare like what we saw from Google +1 and there was no aggressive steps to dominate the social scene like we have seen with Facebook.

What we did see is a soft opening with no visible press release. When looking through Google news and other news sources, it was almost impossible to find anything written about So.cl. It makes a person wonder if they are doing this on purpose for something greater.

It was a quiet entry. It is hard to say why Microsoft chose to take this route. Maybe they determined they could not compete with Google +1 or possibly they are holding back and delivering to the market something it has never seen. It could also be a soft opening with little fanfare only to do a major press release a few months later. Hard to speculate what the marketing tactic will be.

What we do know, is it has been released and is available for socializing. Is you are a user or plan to use it at some point, come on back to this post and let me know what you think. I am big Facebook and Google +1 user. It would be interesting to hear from a user who has some time on the system.

So.cl Microsoft’s Social Network

Announced last year in December, So.cl can be used by everyone with a Facebook or a Windows Live ID account. Pronounced “social,” it’s a research project that combines search and social networking for learning purposes.

After logging in, you’ll be asked to follow both topics and people. Then you’ll see the start page, a feed full of what other users are searching and saying. I guess Microsoft wants everyone to know how you’re participating.
