A domain for sale can be a blessing or a curse if a buyer is not careful. A domain can come with a lot of baggage that will kill your ability to get it indexed or ranked high in Google. There are a few things you need to watch out for when buying an existing domain name. These same rules will show what kind of domains are not good to sell or conduct as a site flip.
Take a look at this video for some more helpful tips on buying the right domain name
Use the Wayback Machine to find out the history of the domain. A lot of times information that is harmful to a new owner can be found here. Domain names that have been used for industries that are not accepted whole-heartily by Google, need to be avoided.
A domain that has had a stable website on it for close to a year of more is ideal. I like to find old domains that are either close to one year old or three years old. Generally the older the domain, the more it will cost.
Look for domains that have existing external links pointing to it. Take a look at a few of the links to ensure they are still in existence and also take a look at the kind of site that is pointing to the domain name. You want to look for a domain that has high quality sites pointing to it. Too many spammy sites can mean trouble.
By trouble, I mean this domain participated in a link farm or one of those services that are consider high risk to Google. They are seen as lower quality and much harder to rank with than a brand new domain. Just because a domain is old, does not mean it is better than a new domain. Once an old domain has become tainted, it is almost impossible to fix it. The effort is better spent elsewhere.
If you find a domain name that avoids the issues I talked about in the above paragraphs, then it is a good choice for your WordPress website or non WordPress website. No matter how on-target the domain is to your business, it never makes sense to buy a domain name that comes from a troubled past. You will be wasting your time trying to correct the damage done to it.
One thing to consider, If you are a site owner who is looking for a domain to build a Google News site, then you will want to stay away from any domains that are niche specific. For example a domain like this: shoenewsinfo.com would not be a good choice for a Google News website. But a domain name like, snews.com or plsnews.com would be ideal. The less specific to a niche the better. Keep this in mind only for news sites.
